Canoeing in Western Mongolia

This trip will take place in the far remote western part of the country and starts at Tsagaan Us River in the Altai Mountains. Here the river winds lazily along the valley, through rolling hills and stunning scenery. Long rapids, powerful and irregular waves, dangerous rocks, and boiling eddies will require precise manoeuvring and thus make the trip more challenging, but fine for very adventurous first timers.

Days 1-2 Flight to Ulgii - Tsagaan Us River

You will be transferred to the airport for the morning flight to Ulgii. This is the centre of Bayan Ulgii Province, the only Muslim province in Mongolia . About 90% of its inhabitants are of Kazakh descent, having arrived from the western part of China in the 1800s after the Mongolian Government gave them some land. The flight takes 4 hours including a stopover for fuel. Your guide will accompany you on the flight. On arrival at the local airport our staff will meet you and drive you out of town for lunch. After lunch we will drive to our first camp site of the beginning of Tsagaan Us River. The drive is about 250 km.

Day 3 Tsagaan Us River - Lake Khoton

After a relaxed breakfast we will start with easy canoeing down the Tsagaan Us River which provides a good opportunity for refining canoeing skills. Overnight will be at the north east of Lake Khoton.

Day 4 Zagastain River

Today we will reach to the confluence of Tsagaan Us River canoeing by the right side of the Lake Khoton. Khoton and Khurgan lakes are connected by Sirgaal channel and both lakes are fed by many rivers and streams that originate in the Altai Mountains and have icy, crystal and white clear water. The landscape around the lakes is very picturesque. The surrounding peaks are snow capped and their foothills are the green valleys filled with flowers.

Days 5-6 Lake Khurgan

This two days of canoeing will find us complete about 20 km. On the second day we will have our lunch on the big island called Agvash. We will camp at the northern side of the lake.

Days 7-11 River Khovd

Today we will wake up to the voices of singing birds. After breakfast we will continue canoeing down the lake for about 7-8 km to reach the Khovd River which originates from the glaciers of Altai Mountains and it's length is about 516 km. As we get close to this mighty river the stream and speed at certain points increases significantly and we encounter the class of IV and V rapids. But it will be perfect for canoeing. You will canoe about 140 km in between high rock cliffs and endless mountains to reach the ending point at the Ulaan-Khus River.

Day 12 Ulgii return flight to Ulaanbaatar

Today we will drive into Ulgii and take the local flight back to Ulaanbaatar . On arrival we will be met and you will be transferred to your hotel.
